If we are to be seen, which many of us desperately try to avoid, our greatest fear is to be seen with a critical eye.
We all know what it feels like to have a critical eye cast over us.
To know each flaw is being highlighted, to hear about it, to be drawn again and again to each “reason” for shame.
To be seen with a critical eye is a lot like being seen by the Accuser.
If we are to be seen, which many of us try desperately to avoid, we pray it is with a compassionate eye.
If the curtain is to be pulled back, and someone gets the chance to peek around into the nooks and crannies of my soul, my habits, my character, my personality, my story,
I pray that they would linger in the joys, the strengths, the kindnesses, the bits of me that are like God
and I pray they would hurry through the deserts, the failures, the sin.
I pray they would come through and cover and soothe and rewrite condemning narratives.
To be seen with a compassionate eye, well, that is a lot like being seen by God.
In our marriages, may we seek to see one another like God does. Use a compassionate eye.
